what happened to the free notary service at california banks?

i was trying to find a notary service today. so i went to a local bank of america, i have done it once at another boa before. but the guy inside told me that they don’t do notary service.

so i went to another bank close by, the person told me that unless it is related to its bank document, they don’t do it, either. so i went to another wells fargo bank, same thing!

I remembered a year ago, that I used a notary service at Miami bank of america, it was free of charge.

so finally i got it done at ups store, and that guy charged me $10 for the service, is that price normal?! it used to be free! what is going on now?

It’s an era of lawsuits, my friend. At the bank where I work they stopped doing any notary services not directly related to our banking products after we got sued for notarizing somebody’s will and it was contested in court that the man who the will belonged to was not mentally competent to sign it.

In reality, a notary stamp just means the notary watched you sign the document and checked your id. In practice, people take a notary stamp to mean a document is all legal and whatnot. I bet a lot of places had similar occurances or heard of them, so they stopped offering notary service.
