what is the best free savings and/or checking/savings account there is available to the public and why?

I use http://www.ingdirect.com and http://www.igobanking.com
They both have high APYs and 0 minimum balance requirements. If you really want to compare banks, go to http://www.bankrate.com/ to find the best rates. Seriously, this is how I found igobanking.
ING’s website is very user friendly and their customer service people are very helpful. Igobanking has a higher APY though.
Igobanking compounds daily and has a high APY. I’ve only transferred 10% of my savings there because I’m testing them out but so far so good.
