If you earn more than $10 of interest your bank will send you a 1099-Int at year end and you will have to report that on your tax return. As far as how much you can earn without paying taxes, as long as your total income is less than your standard deduction, and personal exemption (if you’re allowed to claim it), then you’d have no tax.
